1st Photography Competition Exhibition- January 2017


KARACHI: ‘We believe that communities thrive on human innovation and creative expression. Architects and artists hold our communities to a more aesthetic, more functional and most importantly a more sustainable standard of living’, said by Mr. Jehanzeb Khan, Chief Executive- AkzoNobel Pakistan Limited who was addressing the audience at the Inauguration of First Photography Competition Exhibition organized by BAE-IAP (Board of Architectural Education, Institute of Architects Pakistan). Emphasizing the need of society’s contribution to support such endeavors, he highlighted the role of his company as a part of greater ‘Process’ and said that ‘AkzoNobel around the world has been supporting and investing in the promotion and development of art and architecture’. He also assured his support for the next cycle of Photography competition.
‘The Process’ was the title of the First Photography Competition for the students of architecture from across Pakistan. As the title and definition suggests, the subject and theme addressed the process in architectural context. The Process began four months back inviting all schools of Architecture to nominate maximum five students and each nominee was asked to submit maximum 3 images. The response was overwhelming and out of 99 nominations from 23 schools, 59 contestants from 18 schools across Pakistan submitted their photos and total number of exhibits on display touched a figure of 176. The photos captured a wide variety of subjects under the domain of ‘Process’.
A grand exhibition of the First Photography Competition was inaugurated by the President IAP and CEO AkzoNobel on 18th January 2017 at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture witnessed by large number of students, architects and artists. Addressing on the occasion, the President IAP, Ar. Ali ZafarQazi appreciated the efforts of BAE in bringing students of Architecture to a common platform through this Photography competition – one if it’s kind in the history of IAP. He congratulated the organizing team led by Ar. ArshadFaruqui, Chairman BAE; ably assisted by young architects AffanAdil and BismaAskari for putting the show together very successfully.
Ar. ArifChangezi, Chairman IAP-Karachi Chapter welcomed the participants and expressed his gratitude to BAE-IAP for providing Karachi Chapter an opportunity to host this pioneering event to be followed in the years to come.
On the occasion, Chairman BAE-IAP Ar. ArshadFaruqui highlighted the role of BAE-IAP in synchronizing all institutions imparting architectural education across Pakistan and helping to set standards for quality education. He thanked IAP for patronizing the show and IAP Karachi Chapter for hosting this first ever competition and providing great support throughout the ‘Process’ stretched over almost four months. He also marked the support extended by AkzoNobel to architectural fraternity, in general and for this competition, in particular. Pointing up the role of conveners, he admired the efforts of Ar. AffanAdil and Ar. BismaAskari who left no stone unturned to curate this exhibition with a keen eye to every minute detail. He expressed his gratitude to the jurors who meticulously observed each photograph and evaluated a large number of entries on display to select the best as winners. Ar. Faruqui also thanked Ar. Farida Abdul Ghaffar for her contribution in steering the process. Last but not the least, he said, ‘Without institutions and students’ participation this show would not have been a great success’. The winners of the First Photography Competition were announced by one of the jurors, Farah Mahbub whereas the Jury comprised of following members:

The jury assessed 176 anonymous photographs on display and short listed ten photographs in first round. The shortlisted photographs were further evaluated under given criteria individually by each jury member. All scores of seven jurors were tabulated and positions were declared on the basis of average score after which the names of the winners were revealed as photographs were coded confidentially. Out of 176 photographs, Sakina Hassan of Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture secured First Position with a score of 82.6%. One of the images captured by NawalMazhar of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad scored second position (81.1%). The third position with a score of 79.2% was given to the photograph as clicked by WasiqShakeel of University of Gujrat. Two honorable mentions were given to Ammar Zia of Dawood University of Engineering Technology, Karachi (76.2%) and Laraib Fatima Rizvi of Department of Architecture, UET, Lahore (75.3%). One special position for ‘Dulux Let's Color Award’ was awarded to Ziaullah of CECOS University, Peshawar.
The exhibition as inaugurated on 18th January remained open for public for three days. During IAPex Karachi on 16th April 2017, the winners of First Photography Competition were presented with trophies and cash prizes of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 for securing first, second and third positions respectively by SakinaHasan (IVS, Karachi), NawalMazhar (COMSATS, Islamabad) and WasiqShakeel (University of Gujrat). Ammar Zia (DUET, Karachi) and Laraib Fatima (UET, Lahore) were given honorable mentions. One special position for ‘Dulux Let's Color Award’ was awarded to Ziaullah of CECOS University, Peshawar with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/=. Mr. Jehanzeb Khan, Chief Executive- AkzoNobelPakistan Limited graced the occasion with his presence and handed over trophies and cash prizes to the winners of Photography Competition.
